Guidelines for Computer Use

The Kent District Library provides open and free public access to computer software, the Internet, information databases, and information in all formats. This service is offered as a way of enhancing the Library's print collections with computer resources and information networks from around the world.

The Library has established computer guidelines to enable the widespread use of computers. We ask you to comply with these guidelines so that all users can benefit from this technology service. Failure to follow these Computer Guidelines may result in the loss of computer privileges.

If complaints arise from patron use of the Internet, staff will evaluate the circumstances in accordance with the Library’s Acceptable Use Policy and Library Customer Responsibilities.

Staff Assistance

To help you use these computer resources, the Library offers a variety of learning aids, including online tutorials, written sources, and tip sheets. Staff will be happy to assist you in getting started. Computer classes are offered periodically at several branches for those needing more assistance.

Time Limits

Use of all computers is on a first-come, first served basis. Access to the Internet is limited to 60 minutes per person (not per card number) per day. More time may be given if computer stations are free. Extensions for additional time are done electronically at those branches with reservation software. At branches without this software, patrons may ask staff to extend the time limit. All users must have a valid KDL or Lakeland library card to sign on to the computer to access the Internet. Visitors should see a staff member for more information.

All computers automatically shut down five minutes before closing.

Software/Computer Equipment

Patrons may use personal electronic media and download software on public PCs. Personal files and software saved on the public hard drive are deleted daily.

Email accounts are available through free online email sites such as Hotmail, Yahoo, or Gmail. These services are not part of the KDL computer system and are not supported by KDL.

In the event of an equipment failure, Library staff will work with you to offer alternative sources for information.

Wireless Internet access is available at all branches with no time limits. This service is available to patrons who wish to use their personal laptops, cell phones, or other devices that are equipped with wireless technology.

The Library is not responsible for any loss of data or damage to patrons’ personal electronic media during use of library equipment, software, or other electronic materials.

The following software is pre-installed on all KDL terminals:

  • Internet Explorer and Firefox
  • Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
  • Windows Media Player
  • QuickTime
  • Roxio Creator Starter (CD burning software)
  • Acrobat Reader
  • Calculator

Printing / Downloading / Listening to Audio

The paper for the printers is supplied by Kent District Library. The printing charge is 15 cents per page for black and white and $1 per page for color. A payment kiosk is located by the printer and accepts credit and debit cards, $1 and $5 bills, and coins. Please note that change is dispersed in coins only.

To download information, please bring your own USB flash drive. New 8 GB flash drives may be purchased for $5 each (plus tax) at the circulation or locally designated desk.

Headphones for public workstations may be provided at some branches. However, since availability is not guaranteed, it is recommended that patrons bring their own headphones if they wish to listen to audio or video. Earbuds may also be purchased for $1 each plus tax.

Internet Access

Kent District Library provides public access to the Internet as a way of enhancing its existing collections with electronic resources from information networks around the world. While the Internet provides many valuable sources of information, users are reminded that some information on the Internet may not be accurate, complete, current, or confidential. The Library has no control over the information on the Internet, and cannot be held responsible for its content.

Internet access is filtered on library computers. Internet access through the wireless network is not filtered. Parents or legal guardians are responsible for their child’s reading, listening, and viewing of Library material, including the Internet.

Your PIN

A PIN is a unique four-digit number used in conjunction with your library card number. It assures that your record and computer use is secure, much as your bankcard PIN number does for your bank account. You must use your PIN each time you sign in to use a KDL computer. Your PIN is also needed to place materials on hold. See a KDL staff member if you have difficulty using your PIN.

Acceptable Use

Library computers may only be used for legal purposes. Examples of unacceptable uses include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Display of sexually explicit or pornographic materials
  • Harassment of other users or violation of their privacy
  • Violation of copyright laws or software licensing agreements
  • Damaging equipment software or data belonging to KDL or other users

Read the complete Kent District Library Acceptable Use Policy.

Violation may result in the loss of Internet and/or library privileges. Illegal use of the computers may be subject to prosecution by local, state or federal authorities.
