KDL Spring Programs Inspired by Martyr! and Wandering Stars

By Angela Deckard and Shelby Toren, Branch Librarians

We’re counting down the days until we get to meet Kaveh Akbar and Tommy Orange in person in April! While we are excitedly awaiting the big event, we hope you will join us for some of the many programs we have connected to the themes of Martyr! and Wandering Stars. Enjoy the following On the Same Page programs happening at various KDL branches. Click the program titles for dates, times and locations.

Tiny Death Terrariums
Use bits of greenery as well as fake bones to bring a bit of memento mori into your home or office as you create your own tiny death terrarium.

The Work and Value of Death Doulas
No one likes to think about end-of-life issues, and that's where death doulas come in. Learn about the work of death doulas and how they can help individuals, families and communities prepare for loss through advocacy, education and companionship.

Brief Practices in Mindfulness
Learn about mindfulness and experience several mindful practices to cultivate your own personal practice.

Helping a Loved One with Addiction
What are the criteria for considering whether someone has a substance use disorder? What is the impact of this disorder on their families and loved ones? Steff Condin, ACSW, will share this information as well as what may be helpful and unhelpful if you or someone you know has a relationship with someone struggling with a substance use disorder.

Kaveh Akbar and Tommy Orange Author Visit
Enjoy an engaging conversation between bestselling authors Kaveh Akbar and Tommy Orange as they discuss Akbar’s Martyr! and Orange’s Wandering Stars. A Q&A and book signing with Kaveh Akbar will take place after the event.  Wednesday, April 30, 6:30 PM, Godwin Heights High School Auditorium
Free registration opens on March 17 at 9:00 AM.

Stay tuned for more updates, reminders and more! In the meantime, you can always find up-to-date information on the event at kdl.org/samepage.
