Accessibility at Kent District Library

Accessibility at Kent District Library

At Kent District Library (KDL), we are committed to ensuring that our services, programs and facilities are accessible to everyone in our community. Guided by a purpose of furthering all people, we strive to create an inclusive environment where all individuals, regardless of ability, can fully participate and enjoy the resources we offer.

Library Facilities and Services:

  • Physical Accessibility: All KDL locations are designed to be accessible to individuals of all abilities. Although our buildings are owned by the municipalities, we make efforts to provide maximum accessibility regarding shelving and furniture placement, signage and collection organization.
  • Sensory Accommodations: Each branch is equipped with Sensory Packs containing fidgets, noise-canceling headphones and weighted items to support various sensory needs.
  • Adaptive Technology: Our Beyond Books Collection offers tools such as portable video magnifiers, reading pens and accessible gaming controllers to assist patrons with visual, reading and physical disabilities.
  • Accessible Collections: We provide materials in multiple formats, including large print, audiobooks and Braille. Our Talking Book & Braille Center offers accessible reading materials through the National Library Service for the Blind & Print Disabled, a division of the Library of Congress.
  • Programs and Events: Accommodations such as ASL interpreters and Braille materials can be requested for some of our programs. We will make a sincere effort to arrange for certified ASL interpreters, however we cannot guarantee availability. Requests should be made at least 2 weeks in advance by contacting programming@kdl.org.

Website Accessibility:

  • KDL has adopted the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) to ensure our digital offerings are accessible. We continually work to improve the user experience for everyone and adhere to relevant accessibility standards. Specific details may be found at kdl.bibliocommons.com/info/accessibility. Please note that our website may link to, or interface with, third party websites that we do not control and may not have taken steps to comply with WCAG.

Despite our best efforts to ensure accessibility, there may be some limitations. If you encounter any accessibility barriers on our website or within our facilities, or have other questions or feedback, please contact AccessibilityInclusion@kdl.org or call 616.784.2007.
