There’s something special about walking into a neighborhood bakery and being greeted with warmth, kindness and the smell of fresh bread. That’s exactly what I experienced when I visited Hall Street Bakery in Grand Rapids and chatted with Ondrea Havemeier, who made me feel instantly welcome. The service was amazing! And the baked goods? Even better.
Hall Street Bakery and its sister location, Wealthy Street Bakery, are beloved staples in the Grand Rapids community. Owned by Andy and Ondrea Havemeier, these bakeries are more than places to grab a pastry. They’re places to gather and connect (a bit like a library); plus, you can enjoy handcrafted food made with care (unlike the library).
Their story is one of resilience and community support. As featured in Crain’s Grand Rapids Business, Andy’s journey from homelessness to bakery ownership is nothing short of inspiring. After joining the team in 2019, he worked his way up to general manager, and, with the help of local investors, became co-owner of both bakeries in 2023. Together, Andy and Ondrea are continuing the legacy of these neighborhood hubs, serving up everything from artisan breads and pastries to soups, sandwiches and stone-oven pizzas.
We’re thrilled to have them as sponsors of the Stampworthy Adult Reader Card initiative. They have generously donated three $50 gift cards (we'll be giving away one each month during Stampworthy), redeemable at either bakery location. Whether you’re craving a cinnamon roll, a gluten-free treat or a cozy latte, this prize is a delicious way to celebrate your reading journey.
Stop by Hall Street or Wealthy Street Bakery to experience the magic for yourself.
