Get to Know KDL: Karen from the Wyoming Branch

By Karen Small

I have worked at KDL for 35 years.  I am very proud of this organization, what it represents, and what we do in our communities. My mom has always been a huge reader and library user.  She took us to the library when we could walk.   I loved going and now I get to go all the time, too. My job has changed many times over and each position was fun or exciting.

I enjoy interacting with the customers, especially the kids. My favorite interaction was with a young girl about six years old. She didn't want to read, but her mom wanted her to take home some books. So we went and looked for some fun books. She took home three. She came back the next week, found me and took three more. This went on for a while. After about a year, she came running in and told me she can read books all by herself. Now she is 15 and takes home 10-15 books each time she visits. She is a star!

If I had a whole day to myself...
I would spend my time by sleeping in, stirring up a batch of cookies, finding some dogs that needs some hugs and loves, seeing my grandkids, baking the cookies, reading for a while, eating some cookies and going to bed.

The best advice I have ever received is...
From my dad.  He always said, "go outside and get some fresh air."

My proudest accomplishments are...
My two kids who are smart, good people, and my three grandkids, who are smart, good people.

People would be surprised to know that...
I used to own an A&W Restaurant/Hot Dog stand in the '70s.  We made our own root beer and ketchup and had car hops on roller skates on the weekends.
