We all love a good story, and classic tales have a way of bringing all the warm and fuzzy feelings. And as STEAM experiences have become increasingly woven into our everyday lives, a few spare items from the junk drawer can combine these two loves to create a fun family play night.
Three Little Pigs is a classic tale that many of us know and love. Using straws and tape, create a “straw” fort. Then, dig out some popsicle sticks, or even sticks from outside, and intertwine them to create a wall built of wood. Finally, grab some LEGO bricks and build a brick house.
Once your houses are complete, it’s time to put them to the test! Designate one family member as the “wolf” and have them try to blow down or crush each house. Which house is the strongest? Which materials hold up best? What could you change to make each house more durable?
This activity will not only keep the whole family entertained, but it also provides a fun way to combine STEAM learning with a love of stories. It’s a simple, hands-on activity that encourages creativity, problem-solving and a little friendly family fun.
