KDL Celebrates Disability Pride Month

By Hannah Moulds, Community Outreach Librarian

July is Disability Pride Month—a month to celebrate disabled persons and to embrace their disabilities as integral parts of who they are. Disability Pride initially started in 1990 as a day of celebration as this was the year that the Americans with Disabilities Act was signed into law. On its 25th anniversary, the day of celebration became a month of celebration. The theme this year is “We Belong Here, and We’re Here to Stay.” I love this powerful message – some of us are born with a disability, others of us will live long enough that disability eventually becomes part of our story. People with disabilities are an integral part of every community that deserve to be fully included and valued.

To celebrate Disability Pride Month this year, the Kent District Library Bookmobile and team will be attending the Americans with Disabilities Act Celebration on July 23 hosted by the Disability Advocates of Kent County. Learn more about this free, family event. We also have two booklists that share the joys and challenges of the modern disability experience, with books that feature characters with disabilities. One features books for adults, and the other books for kids

Every part of what makes you uniquely you is inherently special. Happy Disability Pride Month from your local library!
