KDL's Kaleidoscope magazines? Well, meet Monica Rickert-Bolter, the artist behind the Summer edition (available now at a branch near you!). Monica's art is all about putting vibrance into dark space, just like our libraries and patrons do in the communities where we live.
Have you ever wondered who creates the beautiful covers onWhat can you tell us about yourself?
I'm a big ol' Afro-Indigi nerd. I love comics, video games, and animation. My art practice combines these loves with fine art techniques and materials to tell complex stories through layered collages. Dry pastels on black paper are my favorite approach. The textures and vibrancy of the colors remind me of picture books I read as a child. I hope to inspire more people to share their stories in their own unique way.
Where are some of the places you gather inspiration?
I'm inspired by the natural world, particularly plants and deep-sea creatures, so parks and aquariums are among my favorite places. The color combinations and designs of plants and sea creatures are simultaneously so foreign and completely normal. I grew up with family members who adore plants. I learned how delicate but resilient they are, and that patience pays off with new growth.
Describe the perfect summer day.
My ideal summer day is being on a rooftop/patio, either in the Chicago Loop (downtown) or overlooking Lake Michigan, with my husband and tasty bites, especially from a good cookout.
What does the library mean to you?
I have fond memories and a soft spot for libraries. There was always so much to read, learn, feel, escape, and inspire. Something was missing, though; I wanted to see myself and my cultures reflected in these books. I'm fascinated by uncommon and untold stories, so much so that I learned how to make books. I've illustrated and designed the layout for multiple children's books with various authors and am working on a graphic novel with my brother. To this day, I'll exhibit my artwork and host workshops and artist talks with multiple libraries in my hometown (Grand Rapids, MI) and my current home in Chicago, IL. Libraries are special places that provide so much access to receptive people.
