Staff Poem: The Library Stands Alone

By Jonah Chickering, Assistant Branch Librarian, Kentwood Branch

In the halls of safety and knowledge
We find our refuge
A pillar to literacy and community

The library stands alone

Laughing children and typing keystrokes
Fill the air
And the warmest, kindest people

Are its stewards

A break from the race
A break from the cost of life
A break from crumbling selfish society

The library stands alone

A selfless institution
So ancient it would be unheard of
to a modern greedy world

To give shelter to those without
To give a warm smile to those that need it
To share stories, food, a feeling of contentment

This is our purpose
For the library is for everyone
Forever and always
