Just one more week until John Green and Kaveh Akbar take the stage! John Green has written a number of young adult novels and just published his second adult nonfiction book, Everything is Tuberculosis, opens a new window, last month. If you’re caught up with his latest and are still itching for more to read before the big On the Same Page event on April 30, here are some of John Green’s recommendations!
I Have Some Questions For You by Rebecca Makkai, opens a new window
John Green said this was his favorite book of 2023.“It’s crimey. It’s podcasty. It’s just brilliant. Rebecca Makkai writes some of the best sentences around!”
Miracle’s Boys by Jacqueline Woodson, opens a new window
John Green said this book made him both sob and feel hopeful. He notes that while it is written for children 10-years-old and up, he read this book while in his mid-40s and loved it.
The Black Angels by Maria Smilios, opens a new window
If you want to read another book about tuberculosis, this one is for you! It follows a group of Black nurses working in Staten Island who helped cure tuberculosis. “It’s just an incredible story, one of those where you’re like ‘I can’t believe this has never been told before’ but also the writing is phenomenal.”
Bonus recommendation: Pilgrim Bell by Kaveh Akbar, opens a new window
In John Green’s words, “[Kaveh Akbar] writes the kind of poems that get richer and more interesting the more time you spend with them ... I have read this book over and over and it just keeps giving me new gifts.”
We can’t wait to see John Green and Kaveh Akbar in just one week!
