Spooky Books for Kids!

By Bernice Oliver, Assistant Branch Librarian, Kentwood (Richard L. Root) Branch

When my son was in first grade, his class did a long and involved unit on bats in October.  I started to think about how books can celebrate the creepy and spooky things of the season without being specifically about Halloween.

I searched the KDL catalogue (using “ghost” and “creepy”) and found so many great titles!  Did you know that there are quite a few horror books for kids?  Here are a few that caught my eye.

Chapter books:
American Chillers and Michigan Chillers series by Johnathan Rand
Goosebumps and Stinetinglers series by RL Stine
Coraline and The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman

Breath-catching picture books:
There’s a Ghost in this House by Oliver Jeffers
Poultrygeist by Eric Geron
The Baddies by Julia Donaldson

Non-fiction (the creepiest of all):
Mummies Exposed by Kerrie Hollihan
Top 10 Scariest Animals by Brenna Maloney
Deadly Natural Disasters by Steve Foxe

What are some of your favorite creepy stories that are not about Halloween?
