Welcome to summer! We love the warm breezes, the blooming flowers and no more scraping ice off the car windshield. It’s glorious! School’s out, and the freedom from strict schedules feels like a breath of fresh air after nine months of busyness. The start of summer is filled with sleeping in, sandy toes and the heartwarming sound of kids giggling and swings creaking back and forth.
But then…the dog days of summer arrive. The swings are too hot to sit on. The sprinkler water is either too hot or too cold. And somehow, that sand is everywhere — in the car, the house, the bed. The kids are starting to get restless. They, and you, need something new to do.
Here’s the thing: boredom can be good, but even too much of a good thing becomes “bad news.” Luckily, you’ve got your local library that’s both literally and figuratively cool. Whether you’re flipping through this Kaleidoscope magazine or browsing kdl.org/events, you’ll discover a treasure trove of free, fun options. Animals! Magicians! Arts and crafts! Book clubs! STEAM activities! Music! You’ll be filling your calendar with exciting programs before you know it. Plus, you can win prizes through our Summer Wonder challenge just for enjoying these awesome resources.
Now, while it might feel like you’ve hit the summer jackpot, let me remind you — it’s okay to enjoy some laid-back, unstructured time at home (or at the beach!). And guess what? The library’s got your back for that, too. We’ve got books, movies, video games, board games, metal detectors and all kinds of fun gadgets to spark your imagination right from the comfort of home. My personal favorites? The birdwatching kit... or maybe the stargazing kit... or could it be the escape room games? I just can’t decide!
So whether you’re visiting us at the library or relaxing at home, we’re here for all your curiosity-driven summer fun. And of course, it’s all free. We can’t wait to see you at one of our great programs — or to help you find something cool to do when you want to kick back at home or hit the beach. Just be careful with that sand — it really does get everywhere!
