The Grownup’s Guide to Making Friends at Library Storytime

By Josh Mosey | Digital Marketing Strategist

Ah, storytime at KDL, where tots become BFFs faster than you can say “The Very Hungry Caterpillar.” But for us adults? It’s like navigating a maze blindfolded. Here’s how to crack the code:

1.) The “Oh, You Too?” Maneuver: Spot a fellow grownup with that “my-kid-just-ate-glitter” look? That’s your cue. Bond over the shared trials of parenthood with a knowing nod and a “Oh, your kid eats Play-Doh too? Let’s form a support group.”

2.) The Post-Storytime Plot: Propose a post-storytime espresso expedition. It’s like suggesting a playdate, but with more caffeine and less sandbox politics.

3.) The Awkward Silence Filler: Kids don’t do awkward silences; they fill them with screams. We have to use words. Compliment another grownup’s tote bag, especially if they earned it during
Summer Wonder.

4.) Friend Request, Literally: Suggest a social media link-up with a casual, “Let’s take this friendship online.” But ease off the ‘like’ button on their vintage pics unless you’re all in.

5.) The Overenthusiastic Participant: Clap louder, sing off-key and laugh at the book’s punchlines before they’re delivered. Other parents will either admire your spirit or fear it — either way, you’re getting noticed.

6.) The Long Game: Remember, Rome wasn’t built in a day, and neither is a friendship based on a mutual appreciation for Dr. Seuss. Keep showing up, keep being you and eventually, you’ll find your tribe.

So, there you have it. With a sprinkle of effort and a dash of not-so-quiet desperation, you’ll be in the inner circle of the storytime squad. Who knows, maybe we’ll get back to the simplicity of childhood friendships. Until then, keep networking – or as the kiddos say, “Wanna play?”
