Kent District Library offers free bicycle rentals with its KDL Cruisers. The bicycles are typically available May 1 to Oct. 31. Availability for Summer 2020 depends on repening of the library and guidelines from health authorities, due to coronoavirus.
For the 2020 season, KDL Cruisers will be available when we reopen to the public. That date that is to be announced. These branches will have Breezer Uptown EX 8-speed bicycles available for checkout:
- Caledonia Township (4)
- Comstock Park (3)
- East Grand Rapids (3)
- Grandville (5)
- Kentwood (4)
- Krause Memorial in Rockford (6)
- Nelson Township (2)
- Walker (4)
- Wyoming (4)
- Service and Meeting Center (2)
Each KDL Cruiser comes with a basket, a bike lock and key. All bikes will have a diagonal, step-through crossbar.
KDL Cruisers can be checked out to anyone age 18 or older with a photo ID and library card from KDL, Grand Rapids Public Library or the Lakeland Library Cooperative. You'll be asked to sign a Bicycle Borrowing Agreement acknowledging financial responsibility for lost, stolen or damaged equipment. Adults will be allowed to sign waivers for children as long as the adult accompanies the children on the ride.
Bikes are due back by closing of the branch's next business day. Overdue fees are $20/day.
Although Michigan law doesn't require bicyclists to wear a helmet, the library strongly recommends customers bring their own.
