Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Access

We exist to further all people. Kent District Library (KDL) recognizes that our work is ongoing and ever evolving. We see value in and celebrate the uniqueness of each person. The public library will always stand as an institution of enlightenment and as a hub of the community, serving and including everyone.

KDL is committed to advancing diversity, equity, inclusion and access in all aspects of our work to better serve our community. By fostering intellectual freedom and barrier-free access, KDL actively works to reduce inequities in our communities. KDL empowers communities by providing services and programming that represent our patrons.

Through kindness, empathy and love, we serve individuals and communities historically and currently marginalized based on factors including, but not limited to, age, racial and ethnic identity, disability and body type, neurodiversity, faith, gender identity, LGBTQIA+ identity, primary language, citizenship, military status and socioeconomic status.

KDL defines the terms of diversity, equity, inclusion and access as the following:

  • Diversity: Diversity is the active identification, appreciation and celebration of our differences and how that makes us stronger together.
  • Equity: Different than equality, equity helps everyone come to the same place while understanding that each person’s needs are different.
  • Inclusion: Inclusion removes walls, barriers and gatekeeping, ensuring a seat for everyone at the table.
  • Access: The proactive removal of physical, technological and systemic barriers to ensure people of all abilities and backgrounds can fully participate and utilize services.
