Judge a Book by Its Edges

By Aude Shattuck, Branch Librarian

All reading is good reading, no matter how the story reaches you. But sometimes, a physical book brings a little extra magic to the experience.

Sprayed edges have been popping up more and more in newer releases, and they’re such a fun detail to discover. Bold colors, intricate patterns, shimmering gold foil—those tiny design choices turn a book into something you want to linger over. They invite you to slow down, run your fingers along the pages, and appreciate the book as an object, not just a story.

There’s a quiet joy in flipping through a book with decorative edges, catching glimpses of color as you read, and placing it back on the shelf knowing it’s just as beautiful closed as it is open. It feels thoughtful. Special. Like a little gift waiting between the covers.

If you spot a title with sprayed edges, take a moment to look it over. You might find that judging a book by its edges isn’t such a bad thing after all.
