Literacy Champion Spotlight: Robin Trocinski

KDL recently announced the recipients of the Literacy Champion Award, and Robin Trocinski, a preschool teacher at Duncan Lake Early Childhood Center, was one of the winners. Trocinski strives to create a strong foundation for literacy in the Early Childhood years.  She immerses her students in literature and the building-block skills needed to learn to read and works to give literacy tools and supports to the school families. Each year, Trocinski helps to organize the Duncan Lake Preschool Literacy Festival, an event where children play games, interact with other students and earn a free book.

Let's get to know Robin a little bit more.

Why is literacy so important?
Literacy is the window for all people to learn about the world outside of their environment.  It helps us to ask questions, to seek out those answers and become a lifelong learner.

What's your favorite library service or program and why?
There are so many library services that are important. I can't remember the number of times a librarian has helped me locate a book or a type of book I've needed for a class.  The library's monthly calendar of daily activities that parents can do with children are such an easy resource for teachers to share with parents.  The Bookmobile that can be scheduled for special events such as our yearly Literacy Festival is amazing. The teacher library card program for those teachers who live in a different county and makes their school district's local library available and accessible is so valuable.  However, I think that my favorite program has to be the children's story hour.  And I say that because it is also the reason behind one of my most treasured times with my granddaughter.  It was such a treat to be able to take her to story hour and participate with her doing all of the fun activities that were literacy related.

The library's mission is to further all people. How has the library furthered you?
The library has been an invaluable resource and tool for teaching not only my students but my own children and grandchildren.
