Three KDL Branches Are Renovating or Expanding

Krause Memorial (Rockford) Branch
For over 20 years, patrons have asked for an expansion of the Krause Memorial (Rockford) Branch, which was last updated in 1989. With the area’s population nearly doubling since then, the wait is finally over! The planned expansion will more than double the library’s size, triple the community room size, add six study rooms, improve accessibility and include a drive-up book return. The City of Rockford has secured $5 million in public and private funds toward the total project costs, estimated to be $11.7 million. On November 5, City of Rockford voters overwhelmingly approved a millage proposal of 1 mill that will provide critical funding for the project. Fundraising efforts are ongoing to cover remaining costs. Construction is expected to begin in fall 2025, with completion by late 2026.

Cascade Twp. Branch
The Cascade Twp. Branch has been providing library service for more than 25 years! As the library celebrates this quarter-century milestone, we recognize that updates are needed to ensure it can continue to serve the community’s needs today and well into the future.

A 2018 needs inventory showed:
• Inadequate and outdated lighting
• Damage to external doors
• Worn carpeting, paint and wall coverings
• Roof damage
• Outdated and worn furnishings

The branch is getting a refresh! Funding for this project has been set aside from the expired Cascade Township building and grounds millage. The Cascade Township millage renewal was approved in the November 2024 election to ensure there are operational funds to move forward with these improvements and maintain building upkeep. The Cascade Twp. Branch will operate out of the Wisner Center, located at the branch, through the beginning of June. Updates to the building will continue to occur for three to five years and include a new roof, improving accessibility for patrons and Wisner Center upgrades.

Walker Branch
The Walker Branch is currently operating out of a temporary location at 445 Standale Plaza NW in Walker.

The Walker Branch, built in 1991, has served the community well, but the City of Walker and the surrounding area have grown incredibly. The population of Walker has increased 43%, from 17,626 to 25,289, and the rate of growth is rapidly increasing. The library serves as a connecting place, a modern-day town square where everyone gathers to learn and connect. The extreme makeover of the Walker Branch will include:

• 24,000 sq. ft. of state-of-the-art library and community space
(increased from 8,898 sq. ft.)
• Large multi-purpose room, hosting up to 250 guests
• eSports facility
• Bright, open space throughout

The renovated Walker Branch is expected to open in late 2026.
