Experience KDL: Library Garden at the Spencer Twp. Branch

By Clyde Waltenbaugh, Adult Librarian

This April (and May), the Spencer Twp. Branch will begin anew with this year’s version of our library garden! With a passion for community involvement and a love for all things green, we’ve been able to have a portion of our outdoor space be a thriving garden. This project aims to bring together library patrons and neighbors, while providing a space where everyone can enjoy the beauty and bounty of nature.

We’ll kick things off this season by planting a variety of seeds and plants, including tomatoes, peppers, zucchini, cucumbers and a range of colorful flowers. The garden is carefully planned to create a balance of vegetables and vibrant blooms, offering both beauty and fresh produce for our community to enjoy. It’s been terrific seeing families and gardening enthusiasts come together to enjoy this space.

When the plants begin to grow, we’ll start seeing signs of life – from tiny cucumber vines stretching out to the first yellow blossoms of zucchini. The tomatoes and peppers will do their best to show great promise, and hopefully as the flowers grow, they will start to attract bees and butterflies. The garden not only adds beauty to the library grounds but also serves as a reminder of how rewarding it is to nurture something from seed to harvest.

As the summer season progresses, we look forward to the day when we can enjoy the fruits of our labor – both literally and figuratively! There’s something special about sharing fresh produce with the community, knowing that it was grown with care and effort. Whether it’s plucking a ripe tomato, picking a fresh bouquet of flowers or picking herbs for your salsa, we can’t wait to share the harvest with everyone.
