Books, computer access, study spaces – and free fresh produce? The library truly does have it all!
This summer we expanded our partnership with North Kent Connect (NKC) by being some of the first hosts of their new Fresh Connect Mobile Pantry Food Truck at our northernmost locations – Nelson, Spencer and Tyrone Townships.
“Fresh Connect was born from a simple truth: where you live shouldn’t determine what you have access to. We’re working toward a future where fresh, healthy food is accessible throughout northern Kent County. While this has been a key part of what we offer onsite, we know some families can’t always make it to us, so instead of waiting, we’re bringing fresh food directly into the community.”
Who Qualifies?
Everyone! There are no requirements based on income or location.
What do I do?
Show up! Before picking out your food you will be asked to fill out a short demographic survey. This brief survey helps NKC better understand who Fresh Connect is serving and connect with shoppers who would like to learn more about NKC services. The feedback helps NKC continue to improve Fresh Connect and better meet the needs of the community.
What do you offer?
The selection varies but typically consists of produce from Plainsong Farm in Rockford – beautiful and freshly picked fruit, vegetables and herbs. Clear signs give you information on what is available and how many items you can take of each.
This is also a great way to get connected to North Kent Connect’s client services including food programs, case management, housing support and job services.
The Kent County Health Department outreach van also visits most of the Fresh Connect library visits to provide additional information and resources.
When are you visiting?
Fresh Connect aims to visit the Nelson, Spencer Township and Tyrone Township branches once a month around noon. See the full schedule here.
