Literacy Champion Spotlight: Glenys Nellist

Last year, KDL asked patrons to nominate individuals and organizations for KDL's Literacy Champion Award. The submissions were so inspiring! Let's learn more about one nominee.

Glenys Nellist is an extraordinary literacy champion who brings the magic of reading to life for children throughout our community. As a beloved children’s author, Glenys creates stories that capture young readers’ imaginations while sharing the joy, purpose, and creativity behind every book she writes.

From her treasured Little Mole character to her heartfelt blessings books, Glenys’ stories encourage children to explore big ideas, discover important lessons and connect with characters who feel familiar and real. She believes it is important for children to understand not only the stories she creates, but also the “why” and “how” behind them. Through music, rhyme and creative storytelling, she invites young readers into the writing process and helps them see the power of their own ideas.

When Glenys visits the community, she does much more than read aloud — she sings, shares, performs and brings her books to life. Her engaging presentations inspire children to become curious thinkers, enthusiastic readers and confident storytellers. Her characters reflect childlike wonder while teaching meaningful lessons that resonate with readers of all ages.

Although Glenys is an author by profession, she is also a teacher, singer, reader and passionate advocate for literacy. Through every story she shares and every child she inspires, she demonstrates the incredible impact that literacy can have on a community.

We are proud to celebrate Glenys Nellist as a Literacy Champion and thank her for helping children discover the joy of reading, writing and imagining.
