Literacy Champion Spotlight: Realism is Loyalty

Last year, KDL asked patrons to nominate individuals and organizations for KDL's Literacy Champion Award. The submissions were so inspiring! Let's learn more about one nominee, Realism is Loyalty.

Every young person has a story. At Realism Is Loyalty, that story is never the end of the conversation — it's the place where support begins.

Serving youth ages 14–24 on the southeast side of Grand Rapids, Realism Is Loyalty is built around a simple but powerful belief: every young person deserves someone who will meet them where they are and help them move toward a brighter future. The organization's guiding motto, "Empower, Encourage, & Strengthen youth in spite of story, system or choice," reflects its commitment to walking alongside participants as they navigate challenges and pursue their goals.

That support often includes literacy.

Realism Is Loyalty combines mentoring and mental health services with academic support, recognizing that success in school — and in life — depends on more than textbooks alone. Through its Each One Teach One program, participants attend group sessions three times each week, where they receive individualized help with homework and schoolwork during academic breakout sessions.

For some participants, those sessions are about improving grades. For others, they're about building foundational reading skills that many people take for granted. Mentors, known as Articulation Navigators, work one-on-one with youth and adults who struggle with literacy, helping them develop the confidence and skills needed to succeed both inside and outside the classroom.

The organization's commitment to literacy extends beyond academic support. Its leaders believe literacy takes many forms, from reading and writing to financial literacy and lifelong learning. Every May, participants come together for a community book club, selecting a novel to read and discuss as a group. The experience encourages conversation, critical thinking and a shared love of reading while strengthening relationships among participants.

At its heart, Realism Is Loyalty's work is about opening doors. By helping young people strengthen their literacy skills, the organization also helps them build confidence, discover new opportunities and imagine futures that may have once felt out of reach.

Through compassionate mentorship, individualized academic support and an unwavering belief in every young person's potential, Realism Is Loyalty reminds us that literacy is more than learning to read. It's about empowering people to tell — and transform — their own stories.
