This Saturday, September 23, Kent District Library will host a Mental Health Expo from 10:00 AM to Noon at the Kentwood (Richard L. Root) Branch. Join local service providers and experts to learn more about mental health and the organizations available within our community.
Two of the featured organizations are FAN and the Stronger Together Addiction Related Grief Support Group. Sarah Zetty shares more:
Across the state of Michigan, there are currently 20+ chapters focusing on FAN’s mission to offer community-based, compassionate, best-practice/evidence-based services to people who have been affected by addiction- this includes individuals with substance use disorders and their families- and to erase the stigma of addiction while instilling compassion and hope. In Kent County, we currently have both FAN Forums and a Stronger Together Addiction-Related Grief Support Group.
FAN Forums are held monthly, where attendees get a chance to educate themselves about substance use disorders and recovery, while enjoying fellowship with individuals in similar situations. These meetings frequently feature community guest speakers to address these topics and provide resources within our area.
In May 2023, Kent County started the Stronger Together Addiction-Related Grief Support Group for ages 18+ through FAN. We recognized the need for a loss support group for those who lost someone either directly or indirectly due to drugs or alcohol. This group is guided by a set of touchpoints to focus on a healthy understanding of addiction into their grieving process. Our goal is to address addiction-related loss, decrease stigma around substance use disorders and provide hope, while building connection within our community.
Both meetings are held on the 1st Tuesday of each month at the Kent/MSU Extension Building located at 775 Ball Ave. NE Grand Rapids, MI 49503. The Stronger Together Addiction-Related Grief Support Group is from 6:00 - 7:00 PM with our FAN forum following from 7:00 - 8:00 PM.
